How AI can help you learn new skills at any age
One of the things I’ve found most useful about AI — and least expected — is how good it is as a learning tool.
Not just for learning AI. For learning anything.
How AI accelerates learning
Tell it what you want to learn, your current level, and your goal. Let it adapt to you. Ask follow-up questions as they occur to you.
“I want to understand [topic]. I know [current level]. My goal is [outcome]. Teach me the core concepts in plain English, then give me three practical exercises.”
Learning about your industry
“What are the most significant developments in [your industry] in the last 12 months? What are the implications for someone in [your role]?”
Current, relevant, synthesised. In two minutes. If you’re worried about staying current in your field, this is one of the most practical uses of AI available.
Learning a new tool or system
“I need to learn [software/tool/system] quickly. I’m starting from zero. What are the ten most important things I need to know to be functional in the first week?”
Preparing for a new area of responsibility
“I’m taking on responsibility for [new area] that I don’t have deep expertise in. Give me a structured overview of the key concepts, the main challenges, and what I should learn first.”
The thing about learning after 50
You already know how to learn. You’ve been doing it for decades. AI is just a faster, more responsive version of what you’ve always done: finding good sources, asking good questions, applying what you learn.
You’re better positioned to use it than most people half your age.
